Six Months Down

Time does fly when you're having fun! Or, at least when you're working 40 hours a week...

It's crazy thinking that I am already six months into my first post-graduate job. Let me tell you, it's been a learning experience. Here are some of the lessons I've learned so far:

  • Always be early. Don't procrastinate, plan early, and plan often. This lesson can be applied to scheduling meetings, social media posts, and picking out tomorrow's outfit.
  • Along those same lines, decisions take time. Keep on top of things, stay persistent without being pushy, and get the discussion going as early as possible.
  • Things will always go wrong. Obstacles like to present themselves at the most inconvenient of times. Don't let it knock you down.
  • Always have every option known and/or available. If you go in to show a design, the decision maker will want to tweak it in some way. If you can, show them digitally their idea, and if you know it's not the best fit, have solid reason and logic to back up your opinion. Think of the questions they will ask ahead of time so that you're always on the ball.
  • Learn not to sweat the small stuff. It may not be exactly what you want, but at the end of the day, it's their product, not yours. If it's that bad, there's nothing saying you have to use it for your portfolio.
  • Not all days are awesome. An ice cold beer at 5:00 always is.

Through the good days and bad, I'm taking each one in stride. Every moment is a learning experience, and like a sponge, I'm taking it all in.
